Bill Ferree is a long-time student of energy, environment, and politics. He lived for twenty years in climate-change-vulnerable Florida following retirement from a career as an airline pilot. Currently, he resides in Savannah.
Experience gained in working to develop commercial-scale PV solar installations in Florida, including writing contract proposals for actual projects, convinces him that renewable energy technology is advanced enough to make it a cheaper source for energy than underground hydrocarbons.
Experience with installing electric car charging station installations and personal use of hybrid cars and an EV convinces him that a very large portion of road travel can be done more cheaply, and with far less environmental impact, using battery electric vehicles.
Now that the climate risk of continued burning of fossil fuels is well understood and non-combustion alternatives are readily available, an intriguing question begs for an answer. Why is the transition to the newer, better, energy paradigm happening so slowly? Bill believes the answer is our failure to recognize that the climate problem is no longer one of science or economics. It is a political problem. Fortunately, the economic balance is moving toward the clean energy paradigm despite hostile politics. The task now should be to accelerate that trend and to look for "low hanging fruit" that reduces carbon impact during the extended transition period.
